Can you walk into NJ DMV without an appointment? ›

Walk-ins are only allowed for first time licenses/IDs/permits, name changes, and red decals at Licensing Centers. Other MVC transactions that can't be completed online require an appointment that customers need to schedule at NJMVC.gov. Appointments at Licensing and Vehicle Centers must be scheduled at NJMVC.gov.

A REAL ID must first be obtained in person at an appointment. Once you have been issued a REAL ID, it may be renewed online (or by mail). In total, about 80% of all MVC transactions can be completed online, including most license and registration renewals.

Scheduling an Appointment

Appointments at Licensing and Vehicle Centers must be scheduled at NJMVC.gov. Additional appointments are being added daily, overnight, and up to 60 days in advance.

Connolly said to get a REAL ID you must make an appointment on the MVC website. “REAL ID is currently available at all MVC licensing centers, we are also issuing REAL ID at a variety of mobile unit events,” he said.

Appointments during the hours 2-4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays continue to be reserved for seniors. Eligible customers 65 years and older should look for the dedicated appointment option at NJMVC.gov.

However, if you want to fly anywhere in the United States, you will need either a Real ID or a valid passport. You will not be able to use your regular driver's license. The cost of a Real ID is $35. If your license is due to be renewed, you can do it at that time.

The Enhanced ID also costs $30 more than a Real ID. Real IDs are compliant in all 50 states, while Enhanced IDs serve as an alternative to Canadian passports for entry into the US by land or sea. Enhanced IDs have privacy protection measures, including an RFID chip with no personally identifiable information stored.

Starting May 7, 2025, you must have a REAL ID compliant driver license/ID to fly within the U.S., unless you use a U.S. passport or another federally approved form of identification. Until the deadline, a Standard New Jersey driver license is valid for air travel within the U.S.
