Key Takeaways
- PS5 physical version of Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition missing DLC due to manufacturing error.
- Annapurna Interactive offers voucher code for buyers to download missing content.
- Nintendo Switch version includes complete content, highlighting manufacturing issue with PS5 version.
Outer Wilds publisher Annapurna Interactive has acknowledged that the PS5 physical version of the game's Archaeologist Edition has missing content. Normally, this particular edition of Outer Wilds should come with the base game as well as the Echoes of the Eye DLC.
Released back in 2019, Outer Wilds is an action-adventure game in which the player steps into the shoes of an explorer mapping their way through the mysteries of a doomed planetary system. The Echoes of The Eye DLC, which launched in 2021, prolongs Outer Wilds's space journey with brand-new locations to navigate. Outer Wilds: The Archaeologist Edition, whose physical version for PS5 and Switch launched on August 30, offers this combined experience in a single package. Unfortunately for PS5 users, the physical copy still has incomplete content due to an unexpected issue.

8 Hidden Secrets Many Still Haven’t Found In Outer Wilds
Although hidden secrets in open-world games are common, these secrets in Outer Wilds haven't been found by "many" players since the game's debut.
Annapurna Interactive recently confirmed that the PS5 physical version of Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition doesn't feature The Echoes of The Eye DLC on disc. It revealed this happened because "the wrong version of the game made it into manufacturing." The American publisher had joined hands with iam8bit to launch the sci-fi game on physical media. It mentioned that the investigation into this lapse in manufacturing is still underway. Moreover, Annapurna Interactive encouraged buyers of the faulty PS5 copies to present a "proof of purchase" on "support.iam8bit.com" to get a voucher code to download the missing DLC instead.
Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition Physical Copy for PS5 Defeats its Purpose
While the Nintendo Switch version of Outer Wilds: Archaeologist Edition features both the base game and the expansion on physical media, its PS5 counterpart falls short of this expectation due to the aforementioned manufacturing hiccup. Even though the resolution offered by Annapurna Interactive and iam8bit alleviates the problem, it can't really solve the issue with the affected PS5 copies definitively.
The rise of digital games has been steady and virtually inevitable, but this hasn't stopped enthusiasts from sticking to traditional discs and adding to their shelf collection. However, issues like these that effectively rid the buyer of owning the complete product on physical media are disappointing, to say the least. Hopefully, Annapurna Interactive can pin down the root cause and prevent such issues from happening again, with physical releases of The Stanley Parable and Cocoon also shipping later this year.
